Atlanta-area renters are running leaner: new Entrata survey finds 59% of non-saving Southern renters blame housing costs, and 24% of all renters see homeownership as unattainable

Entrata, the property-management software firm serving more than 20,000 multifamily communities, released its Resident Pulse 2026 report Oct. 19, and its Southern findings โ parsed by SaportaReport with Atlanta-based Entrata industry principal Virginia Love โ undercut the assumption that Southern rents translate to Southern savings: among Southern respondents who are not saving money, 59% identified rent or housing costs as the barrier, versus 40% in the Midwest, with 762 Southern renters making up 35% of the national sample. Only 34% of Southern renters report saving regularly; nationally, 53% of renters are eating out less and 40% are switching to cheaper brands, while 61% of renters across generations still want to own a home, 24% consider it unattainable and another 22% have no desire to own โ just 9% would put an unexpected $10,000 toward a home purchase versus 32% who would pay down debt. For flippers, this is exit-market math: the aspiration to own is still there, but the payment capacity behind it is thin โ renovated product priced into payment shock will sit, while value-band flips, smaller footprints and payment-conscious finishes keep the buyer pool wide; for rental exits, rent-to-income strain argues for underwriting modest rent growth instead of assuming the last cycle's jumps.
